You will need three things to take 12 easy body measurements. This will produce your linear (vertical) mathematical proportioned formula.

Allow 30 minutes for measuring yourself. If you have help it should only take 15 minutes.

If you would like expert assistance with taking your measurements Click here (USA) or here (CAN) to find a consultant.

You can enter measurements into our system using inches (fractions: 45 1/2, or decimal, 45.5) or centimetres (120.5)

If you have curvature of the spine, or any other condition that causes one side of your body to have arms that fall at different lengths or any joint to be higher or lower on one side than the other, we need you take the measurements of both sides of your body.

If you only need to measure one side, fill in the form for the LEFT HAND SIDE ONLY.

There are two ways to measure yourself. Both require you to tack a tape measure to the wall, with the highest number at the top and have a straight edge (ruler).

Some women find it easier to work with a full length mirror, while others have found it easiest standing facing the tape measure.

1. Measure top of head to floor.

Stand up as tall as you can.

2. Measure at bend of jaw bone to floor.

3.Measure chin to floor.

Make sure your head is not tilted up or down and that you are looking straight ahead when you take the measurement.

4. Measure base of throat to floor.

The base of the throat is where the collarbones meet. Make sure your head is not tilted up or down; that you are looking straight ahead.

There should be at least 2 ½ inches (6.4 cm) between your chin and the base of your throat but no more than 4 ½ inches (11.4 cm).

(Example: if your chin measurement is 55 inches (139.8 cm) from the floor, your base of the neck measurement should not be less than 50 ½ (128.2 cm) and no more than 52 1/2 inches (133.4 cm)

5. Measure breastbone to floor.

To find the breast bone place finger between collar bones, lightly run it down the sternum until you feel a bump followed by a depression. That is it.

Another way to find the breast bone is to move your finger straight across your collar bone about one inch. Then proceed down the chest wall until you feel the thick bone. Immediately after the bone will be an indention. Take the measurement from that point.

This is one of the hardest measurements. There should be at least 1 ½ inches (3.8 cm) but less than 4 ½ inches (11.4 cm) below the collar bone.

(Example: if the base of the throat is 52 inches (132 cm) the breast bone should be at least 47 ½ (120.6 cm) but no more than 50 ½ inches (128.2 cm) above the floor.

6. Measure elbow to floor.

7. Measure waist to floor.

To find exact waist bend to the side.
The waist line is your diaphragm and you can not bend below it.

8. Measure Leg-Torso Joint to floor.

To find the point where the leg joins the torso - move one leg to the side. There will be an indentation.

9. Measure wrist to floor.

Measure the middle of the wrist bone to the floor. Take this measurement with your arm at your side.

10. Measure 3rd finger to floor.

The measurement is taken from the middle knuckle of the middle finger. Measure with your arm at your side.

11. Measure from knee to floor.

Take the measurement from the middle of the knee which is located at the indentation of the knee.

12. Measure from ankle to floor.

Take the measurement at the top of the ankle bone.

Change these instructions to inches or centimetres by selecting the units you will be using at the top of the data entry form.

Follow the instructions for each measurement carefully. Our formula is calculated to the nearest 1/8 of an inch.

For clarification, only record to an 8th of an inch such as: 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4 and 7/8. Example: 5 feet 6 inches and 3/8 would be recorded as 66 3/8 inches.

All measurements should be taken barefoot.

Tape the measuring tape at both ends to a wall or door with the smallest number (1 inch) starting at the floor.

Make sure the tape measure is touching the floor.

The straight edge will be useful when measuring the top of your head and various other parts of your body. Place a straight edge or ruler on the pivotal point of your body as instructed. Keeping it horizontal, use it as a pointer to find that measurement on the tape measure.

You can do this yourself or ask someone to help you.
